Death of a Deputy Sherrif in a Boating Accident on Lake Anna

Large wake blamed for sheriff's death

Spotsylvania County Sheriff Howard Smith is blaming a large boat wake for an accident that killed one of his deputies.

Smith says Deputy Dean Ridings was thrown from a 19-foot boat when it hit a large wake or series of wakes about 12:40 p.m. Saturday. Speaking Sunday, Smith said the 52-year-old Ridings was thrown overboard and knocked unconscious when his head struck the boat.
Ridings was on marine patrol when the accident occurred.

The Department of Game and Inland Fisheries Law Enforcement Division is investigating, but Smith says he doubts charges will be filed.

While no boating laws were violated, this is a wake up call for all boaters to slow down on Lake Anna. My small boat, 10.5 ft, would have been turned over. Moreover, boaters need to be vigilant of waves and turn into the waves so as not to be hit in the side. No wake zones need to be established around swimming areas and docks. Lake Anna should not be treated as the Wild West.

Editorial: I took the course and passed and thoroughly recommend the course. They will be offering the course again later in the year. Make sure you bring food sandwiches with you. It is a long intensive day!!!!!I used my gps locator to find the location; it is not in downtown Mineral.

1. Appreciate your interest.

2. The Boat Virginia course is an introductory course designed to meet the boater education needs of recreational boaters who operate personal watercraft (PWC) and powerboats under 26 feet in length. And it is a good point to start to learn about boating and more importantly, safe boating.

3. The course includes a variety of information that includes but is not limited to: general information concerning boat types; operating a boat; applicable boating laws and regulations; navigation; and trailering to name a few.

4. Regarding material to review prior to the course, it would be beneficial if you can get your hands on either one or both of the below listed pamphlets, both of which should be available at major sporting stores. Around Lake Anna the pamphlets are available at all the marinas and the post offices in Bumpass, Mineral and Louisa. Most of the topics discussed in these two pamphlets will be covered to some degree in the course.

5. Need the following information on each student ---full name, date of birth, USPS mailing address, and telephone number. This information is required by VDGIF for recording keeping purposes. Once this information is received we will reserve a billet for you.

6. The course will be held at the Kirk O'Cliff Presbyterian Church located at 16420 Monrovia Rd (Rt612), Mineral, VA 23117. The church is really located in Spotsylvania County very close to the lake. Course will begin 9 am (request students arrive circa 8:30 am) and should be over circa 4:30 pm. Students should bring a brown bag lunch as eating facilities are not close by.

Electric Motor is best for small boats

With the high price of gas, the electric motor is the way to go. Electric motors vary in push power; some even have hp ratings. My brother has a boat that does not qualify for the small boat club; he is still trying to get his motor to work.He may invest in an electric motor. Make sure you have a spare battery if you have an electric motor on your small boat!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Person overboard on a small boat

When a person goes overboard on a small boat, a rope needs to be thrown to the person. The person could tip the small boat over by trying to climb back in. All small boaters need to wear life preservers at all times.
